The DeForest Medical Corporation is a Lunar medical devices and health care company with headquarters in Sol on Luna. The company was founded by William DeForest in 2364 during a period of widespread unemployment on Luna due to financial cuts from TerraGov into its initial Lunar Colony program. Being unable to afford transport back to Terra, DeForest continued his research as a cardiologist privately, leading to DeForest Medical Corporation’s first invention, the nanowire catheter- whose patent was sold to formally establish the company that year, in the first major business IPO offered by a non Terran colony. Ever since, DeForest has been a mainstay in extra-terrestrial business studies.

DeForest now produces medical devices, diagnostics, and generic pharmaceuticals, having discontinued its pediatrics program in 2513.

History

Foundation and early history

In 2364, at the age of 64, William DeForest bought the settlement and manufacturing rights to the entirety of Sector IV on Luna for the price of 1.3 trillion dollars, though the fee was largely covered when DeForest sold his nanowire catheter patent to Drevniye Tech. With the labs and its faculty now under his employ, DeForest manufactured and sold synthesized nervous tissue through the Washington fabrication lab, which was later expanded to house the entire corporate headquarters. It took six years for DeForest Medical Corporation to break even due to the expenses of space travel at the time, though the company saw significant success with the introduction of several mass drivers, which cut the company’s expenses by a factor of ten.

Initial Intergalactic Expansion

With space travel breakthroughs making civilian travel affordable, DeForest Medical Corporation advertised itself as the only medical company capable of producing the technology that low-gravity offered at a price new colonies could afford. As civilian projects on Io and Mars began, and a strong exodus of Terran citizens to these colonies bolstered their working numbers, DeForest Medical Corporation worked closely with TerraGov to keep medical manufacturing off of Io, citing its toxic environment, and on Mars, where it controlled a large percentage of the industrial zone space for the purpose of producing generic pharmaceuticals. Their aggressive stance at keeping medical companies off other low-gravity planets is often cited as why their market share in medical devices on Terra has been above 90% for the last seven decades.

In 2537, DeForest began to follow the precedent recently set by Nanotrasen, and expand beyond TerraGov's territories. Increased marketing and volume in shipping to such areas have only led to minimal growth, however, as the demand is significantly lower in areas where medical care is less regulated and cloning technology is authorized, as well as the sabotage done by competing companies such as Nanotrasen and Drevniye Tech, who have been both found guilty and fined for the destruction and theft of several DeForest medical shipments.

Reaching Spinward

In 2551, DeForest reversed its twenty-three year negative annual revenue record, renewing hopes from financiers. This change is largely credited to Dr. Hirowatari for discovering the air-based incisor, which has vastly cut the cost and operation time of their surgical suites, as well as leading to the development of new products such as the hypospray and the pseudo-scalpel. The affordability and rapidity of the products has led to several stable contracts with colonies in the Spinward Periphery, especially with the Spinward Stellar Coalition.

In 2556, DeForest experienced the greatest increase in revenue since its founding as TerraGov contracted DeForest Medical Corporation for the creation of Terra’s new luxury levitating hospitals, which are expected to be finished by 2570. New regulations brought by TerraGov in 2558, however have curtailed DeForest’s revenue growth, due to prohibitions in trade with any colony that does not condone the use of cloning technology. This led to an immediate halt of all shipments to colonies outside of TerraGov’s authority, as well as a number of smaller rogue colonies on the outskirts of TerraGov’s control on Alpha Centauri, which had only just begun contracts with DeForest.
